In the near future the internet and wireless technologies will connect different sources of information such as sensors, mobile phones and cars in an ever tighter manner. This shift is often referred to as the Internet of Things.

To harness the potential of that shift in Finland, big corporations, SMEs and university partners grouped under the TIVIT umbrella for the Internet of Things (IoT) program. The IoT is a four-year program that aims to establish Finnish ICT industry as an internationally recognized leader in the IoT domain. The program is part of TIVIT’s overall goal to position Finland as a gateway between Europe and China in the ICT sector.

In this webinar, Wilhelm Rauss, Focus Area Director at TIVIT, introduces the IoT program with its goals and general plan, timeline, project partners and project achievements so far. The program includes six working packages whose combined goal is to create an open general platform for IoT that would offer horizontal solutions for all major sectors (health, transport, security, energy).

Started in March 2012, the program has already achieved tangible results like 23 published scientific papers, advances in data collection and 3D prototyping as well as closer cooperation ties with the French Cluster and the Chinese partners.

TiViT’s Data to Intelligence (D2I) program seeks to find ways to use big data for the benefit of businesses and services. In this webinar Prof. Jukka Heikkilä from Turku School of Economics will discuss the process and findings on business modeling conducted during the D2I program.

The presentation starts off with a general description of what business modeling is and goes on to discuss the different types of business models and business process design (Canvas, BM2EA, STOF). In addition, Professor Heikkilä shares lessons learnt so far from researching business modeling processes for network-based businesses.

Non-Instrusive Applience Load Monitoring (NIALM) is a project under TiViT’s DIEM program that develops a method to detect electrical devices’ usage with only electrical meters. The benefits of the method are easy installation and seamless user experience. NIALM has many applications but in this particular project it is used for remote senior monitoring.

The project’s outcome is eQL Care – an easy to implement system that helps nurses and care-takers monitor senior’s activity levels through their usage of electrical devices. From a business perspective, eQL Care would be brought to market as a service for municipalities, consumers and care-taking business alike.  Watch this short webinar to learn more about NIALM and see eQL Care product demonstration.

NIALM on menetelmä, jonka avulla pystytään tunnistamaan asunnossa käytettäviä sähkölaitteita pelkän sähkömittarin avulla. NIALM:ia on mahdollista hyödyntää useissa eri sovellutuksissa, mutta tässä DIEM-projektissa keskitytään seniorivalvontaan sähkömittarilla.

Projektin tavoitteena on luoda eQL Care-järjestelmä, jonka avulla on helppo seurata senioreiden aktiivisuutta, niin hoitajan kuin omaisenkin näkökulmasta. Bisnesmallina on tuoda eQL Care markkinoille palveluna, jota voidaan tarjota aina kuluttajista kuntiin ja hoitoyrityksiin asti.

Avoin data murtaa perinteiset tiedon kulutuksen ja -julkaisun perinteet, niin valtiollisella kuin yksityiselläkin puolella. Valtion yksiköt ja muut viranomaiset avaavat valtavia määriä lakitekstejä, tilastotietoa, liikennedataa, terveysdataa, jne. Nämä uudet tietolähteet tarjoavat tapoja rikastaa mediasisältöä, esimerkiksi reaaliaikaisilla datavirroilla, visualisalisoinneilla tai paikka- ja tilanneriippuvalla tiedolla. Samalla kun uusia datalähteitä avataan, on myös uusia palveluja ja sovelluksia nähtävissä useilla alueilla.

Tässä tutkimuksessa raportoimme miten nämä trendit liittyvät yhteen. Laajan Suomalaisen kenttätutkimuksen ja siihen pohjautuvan liiketoimintamallianalyysin avulla identifioimme miten alan edelläkävijät ovat muodostaneet liiketoimintansa, missä roolissa he toimivat avoimen datan arvoverkostossa ja mitkä ovat heidän pääasialliset tulonlähteet. Toisin sanoen, kuvailimme miten suomalaiset avoimen datan tienraivaajat näkevät uuden markkinapaikan.

Yleisesti ottaen avoimen datan kaupallinen hyödyntäminen Suomessa on edelleen varhaisessa vaiheessa. Silti muutamia loistavia esimerkkejä kaupallisesta menestyksestä on nähtävissä, kuten oman datan analysointia joukkoistamalla saavutetut kustannussäästöt, tai julkisen datan laajamittainen käsittely ja analysointi kehittyneillä algoritmeilla. Lisäksi löysimme joukon pienyrityksiä, jotka ovat vasta rakentamassa liiketoimintaa avoimen datan ympärille. Tulevaisuus näyttää miten nämä toimijat kasvavat, ja lunastavatko he avoimen datan ympärille rakentuneet odotukset.

F-Secure has been developing cloud-based security software for several years. From protecting devices against malware we are currently expanding to protecting the irreplaceable content for the people. F-Secure Content Anywhere is a simple and secure cloud service that backs up the content from user’s devices and allows the user to access the content from any device, any time. In the course of developing Content Anywhere, we organized a long-term user study with a group of key users, who tested the new cloud service with their devices.

We benchmarked the new service against our earlier Online Backup service to validate the new value proposition, users’ mental model, UX design conventions, and to identify areas for further improvement. The long-term user study was supported by an online focus group setting.  This allowed the development team to carry out intimate dialog with the test users, learn from their expectations, gather their feedback, and to probe specific topics that were identified during the research project. In this presentation, we discuss the research method, its applicability to cloud service design and development, and illustrate the Content Anywhere service.

Web-based software and services are available all over the world instantly after they are released online. They can be used and updated without need to install anything, and once in place, they can also be reused in other contexts. As the amount of web services and devices used to consume data has exploded, it is becoming difficult to handle and gain access to the relevant data. Mashups are a new breed of web applications that act as content aggregates that leverage the power of the Web to support instant, worldwide sharing of content. In this paper, we apply mashupping technologies to software development, and introduce the concept of mashware, where components loaded on-demand from different sites form real applications building on the strengths of each individual component. In addition, we discuss our proof-of-concept system, where a mashware prototype has been realized for mobile devices.

Mashup-sovellukset ovat uudenlaisia ohjelmistoja, joissa tekijät yhdistelevät webistä valmiina saatavaa sisältöä uusin, innovatiivisin tavoin. Tässä webinaarissa visioidaan, mitä vastaava malli tarkoittaisi ohjelmistokehitykselle. Toisin sanoen: miten ohjelmistoja – jotka esitelmän otsikon mukaisesti ovat mashwarea – voisi rakentaa eri puolilta webiä ladattavista palasista. Tämä sallisi hajautetun ohjelmistokehityksen, pilvipalveluiden laajamittaisen hyödyntämisen osana komponentteja sekä aiempaa nopeamman kehitystyylin.

Kuluttajuuden ja median käytön muutos ohjaavat meitä ymmärtämään kuluttajuutta uudella tavalla. Kuluttajaymmärryksen keskiöön nousevatkin kulutukset ääri-ilmiöiden ymmärrys sekä jokapäiväinen kuluttajuus.

Ymmärtämällä kuluttajien arkisia toimia median parissa voimme ymmärtää laajemmalti median roolia jokapäiväisessä elämässämme. Toisaalta lisäämällä ymmärrystä kuluttajuuden ääri-ilmiöistä, kuten kuluttajien vastarinnasta, voimme paremmin ymmärtää myös jokapäiväistä kuluttajuutta.

Kaiken kaikkiaan näiden eri näkökulmien kohtaamispiste tarjoaa meille mahdollisuuden syvempään kuluttajan median käytön ymmärrykseen.
